What changes when PNG becomes WebP?
- The decoded pixel width and height are preserved.
- Transparent and semi-transparent pixels remain transparent.
- The visible colour information is encoded using lossy WebP at the selected quality.
- Fine text, thin lines and sharp graphics can soften at lower quality settings.
- Embedded metadata such as text chunks, EXIF and colour-profile data is not carried into the new WebP.
- An animated PNG is exported as a static WebP image from the first visible frame.
